Demolishing the old shed seemed to be a fitting way to end the gardening year at NC on Monday. Despite all rickety appearances whoever had built it many years ago had done so to make it last, so we found our work cut out as everything was securely nailed together. Much to my surprise I found that I had a talent for the crowbar and enjoyed prising the wooden boards apart-wanton destruction is fun! Sir James and Lady Halena came along to watch as Dvortek finally removed the last post to enthusiastic applause, then we all retired into the orangery for mince pies courtesy of the Grahams, all very festive. Clearing up continued afterwards in the pouring rain, not a very pleasant couple of hours but when it passed we pruned the redcurrant bushes and fed the debris into another of Derek's roaring bonfires, very welcome on a dreary day. When we all return in January a whole new gardening year awaits but until then we are all very glad of a rest.
